A blackjack round begins with each player placing a bet. The dealer deals everyone including himself 2 cards. Player get them usually face up. One of dealer cards is face up and the second face down.
If the dealer carries a card of value 10 (or an ace) as the up card then it’s possible he owns a blackjack. In that case all players will lose unless they have a blackjack, too.
If the dealer shows an ace as up card, he’ll let all players to insure their respective hands against it. The insurance bet pays 2:1 if the dealer indeed carries a blackjack (10 as the down card).
If the dealer holds an ace showing and one of the players have a blackjack then the dealer may query if that players wants "even money".
So the player gets an option to immediately be paid for the blackjack at 1:1, or to decline “even money”, and get paid at 3:2, of course, only if the dealer does not carry a blackjack. If even money is refused and the dealer happens to have a blackjack then it is termed a “push”.
If the dealer & the player carry the same card value, it’s also called as a “push” (tie) and none wins.
Once it is confirmed that the dealer does not own a blackjack then the players, in turn, may opt to play their hands.
